The Saddlechariot is safe, kind to ponies , fun, accessible to any person and any animal, and totally modern; a range of characteristics which appears to infuriate the British Horse Establishment. Well nobody is perfect.
Safety first, because that is why the Saddlechariot exists. All the dangers of a horse drawn vehicle are because it is attached to a powerful, unpredictable, independent minded organism whose response to the unusual is to run very fast indeed. Rather than change the nature of the animal, I have developed a way to detach the horse........instantly and safely. Look at the video .
Hours of research show that saddlechariots, however much they are provoked, threatened or teased, do absolutely nothing when not attached to an animal. For how it works, why cowardice is the best design tool etc, go to Safety .
Henry is the reason the Saddlechariot exists. Henry is a small pony with very decided opinions and what he doesn't like , he tells you about. He doesn't like bits, blinkers, cruppers, whips or "contact". He doesn't like rubs, sores or galls, the bane of traditional harness, so I designed a harness that doesn't cause those problems. In addition, the saddlechariot is really easy to pull, even across rough ground, so Henry goes like stink, cross country with 17 stone of me having a ball, and he goes because he wants to, because the vehicle and harness were designed and refined for him, not for me, not for looks, not for fashion, but for Henry.
Fun. Driving the saddlechariot, even the first time, produces a really stupid grin. It is fun. Fun wasn't designed in, no marketing man told me to do it, it's just there. And I love it. If you don't want to have fun, and a silly grin pasted round your face, don't get a Saddlechariot.
Accessible is one of those ghastly buzzwords, and this was never designed into the Saddlechariot. This is a very personal revolution and the result of 8 years of being treated as dirt by the British Horse Establishment. Homo sapiens includes every person in the world. We can all interbreed. Equuus caballus includes all ponies and horses. They can all interbreed. I build Saddlechariots for Homo sapiens and Equus caballus. I don't discriminate on any grounds. To select among Homo sapiens on grounds of colour, or ethnic backgound is bigoted and illegal. Why is racism and snobbery acceptable when describing Equus caballus, and more importantly, should racism and snobbery be acceptable anywhere? And the saddlechariot works not just on Equus caballus, but all equids, donkeys, onagers, zebras and maybe on cattle and sheep. I don't discriminate. I don't build saddlechariots for the disabled. I build them for people. And you can drive safely , cross country, solo, at speed from a wheelchair. Come and have a go.
Which brings us to modern. I started building Saddlechariots in 2,000 AD, nearly 5,000 years after the chariot first appeared. I stuck with round wheels because nobody has come up with a better shape yet, but if you do, I will try it. I work with Lancaster University Engineering Department, and surprising though it may seem, there have been some engineering advances in the last 5,000 years and Lancaster University have been showing them to me, pneumatic tyres, sealed bearings, stainless steel, liquid laser, etc. If they make things safer for Henry and I, and more comfortable for Henry and I, stuff tradition, I'll use it.
